Best Youth Theatre

Best Youth Theatre (aka BYT) is creative, re-inventive, challenging, inspiring and progressive – a multi-award-winning, dynamic young people’s theatre company in St Albans. BYT is our flagship company, producing a stream of challenging, complex and amazing theatre pieces.

Based at Sandringham School, over the past few years, under the leadership of Lisa Schulberg and Dawn Hudson, the group has gone from strength to strength. Our aim is to produce a stream of challenging, stretching and compelling theatrical events for local theatres and national festivals.

The group is split into two age groups – BYT1 for school years 7 to 10 and BYT2 for school years 11 upwards. Both groups perform stretching shows to the public and we achieve this WITHOUT AUDITION. This means everyone has a chance to be fully involved without the competitive pressure of being tested against peers. This creates a co-operative sense of safety and equality in the group which allows us to feel free to explore dramatic situations without fear of being judged or ridiculed. The results speak for themselves, not just in the quality of performances but in the development and maturity of the group as well-balanced, happy and confident young adults.

In 2022, BYT ‘s productuion of Find a Partner was selected to appear at the National Theatre as part of the Connections festival. This was our SECOND invitation only one other youth theatre in the UK has achieved this.

In 2019 our hilarious and complex musical Olympiaganza rocked the Roman Theatre of Verulamium stage in front of sold out audiences. There’s a scene from the show below.

In 2018 our stunning production of These Bridges showed everyone what could be accomplished with commitment and teamwork and our second open-air show at the Roman Theatre, Are We Connected? was a huge success. And GONE in 2020 took us to new heights of drama and stagework.

In 2017 our production of Just won three awards at the Welwyn Drama Festivals and our younger group began a new tradition with an open-air summer production at the Roman Theatre of Verulamium – The Birds which we followed in 2018 with Around the World in 80 Days

In 2015 BYT’s moving and disturbing production of The Boy Preference was selected from over 300 groups across the UK to perform at the National Theatre.

There is also a chance to see the amazing immersive lockdown Zoom experience ‘Dreamweaver‘, created by our students and performed in 16 separate breakout rooms in Zoom giving each audience member a totally unique experience.
